Cold Weather – Statistics

Environmental cold can affect any worker, especially those who work outdoors and are involved in support activities for utilities, delivery services, construction, oil and gas operations, etc.

    • Each year in the United States about 1,330 people die of cold exposure, essentially freezing to death.
    • While most people that succumb to hypothermia may be outdoor adventurers on snowy mountain tops, regular people die in cities and rural areas as well.
    • According to a study done in 2015, cold weather is 20 times as deadly as hot weather, and it’s not the extreme low or high temperatures that cause most deaths.
    • The majority of deaths occurred on moderately hot and moderately cold days instead of during extreme temperatures.

Every Year, dozens of Americans die due to exposure to cold or as a result of the cold inclement weather including:

  • Car accidents
  • CO2 poisoning as a result of faulty heaters/heating systems
  • Fires as a result of inadequate clearance around heat sources
