Label Requirements NFPA 704

NFPA 704 does not specify when a container, tank or facility must label with the 704 diamond. It tells you HOW to label when another code, standard or an AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction, such as the local fire department) requires such labeling. The procedure of identifying and evaluating if a chemical is hazardous and the degree of the hazard.

Most common symbolic labeling systems are listed below:

Numerical rating indicates severity of hazard:

  • Zero (0) indicates no or minimal hazard
  • Four (4)  indicates severe hazard

Color codes indicate types of hazards:

  • Red – flammability
  • Blue – health
  • Yellow – instability
  • White – special hazard
