Know Your Pedals

Acceleration:

  • Smoothly speed up when accelerating, this is safer and saves gas.
  • Wear shoes that do not interfere with operation of the gas pedal (no heels or oversized shoes)
  • When driving on highways with little to no turns and little traffic, use cruise control BUT, be ready to apply your brakes at any instance.

Braking:

  • Apply firm and even pressure to the brake pedal to allow for a smooth brake.
  • To signal a brake, tap the brakes to signal the drivers behind you.
  • Apply the brakes each time you enter an intersection.
  • Make sure to use your brakes only when necessary. Plan ahead to avoid sudden stopping.
  • Avoid slamming on your brakes. Press the brakes evenly and back off the brakes until you have gradually come to a smooth finish.
  • Protect your brakes from failing by avoiding “Riding them”. This can lead to brake failure.
  • Check brakes often, especially if you have gone through water or through hilly areas.
