Fire watch and hole watch personnel play a critical role in workplace safety, as mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in Section 1910.252 of the Code of Federal Regulations. As integral members of welding teams, fire watch workers prevent smoldering fires that may arise from metal cutting or welding activities. Similarly, hole watch personnel ensure the safety of individuals working in confined spaces, as defined by OSHA in Section 1910.146. Both roles are vital components of construction and industrial maintenance safety programs.

The primary responsibility of both fire watch and hole watch personnel is to promptly raise the alarm in case of emergencies. While fire watch personnel are vigilant for sparks after welding or cutting, their primary duty is to sound the alarm, enabling firefighters to respond effectively. Hole watchers are not expected to enter confined spaces for rescue operations; instead, they sound the alarm to summon rescue professionals.
