Listening

Listening is a voluntary act that includes interpreting and/or processing that sound. In fact, almost half of our communication time is spent listening. Listening to an audience allows you to provide feedback and take in the information when needed. However, hearing is noticing a sound/ vibration but not using the information given to you.

Listening Key Points:

  • When you are active listening make sure to imagine the speaker’s situations. This may help you better their frame of reference or point of view.
  • Observe the speaker’s vocal inflection, enthusiasm or lack there of and style of delivery. Paying attention to these three elements can help you understands their message better.
  • Note the important situations of the conversation, use key moments or high emotional sections to build a message of the conversation.
  • Provide feedback from the conversation, make sure you are giving appropriate feedback by recognizing the speaker’s emotions and tone.
