Your Brakes Fail

What if you hit the brake and nothing happens? Now’s the time to think about what to do if your brakes fail. You certainly won’t have time when it happens. Memorize these steps to take in case of brake failure:

  • Downshift to low gear.
  • Pump the brake pedal fast and hard to build up brake fluid pressure. It should take three or four pumps to do this.
  • Apply the emergency brake but release it if the car begins to skid.
  • You can still steer. If you can’t stop, try to steer into something soft, such as bushes.
  • Sound your horn and flash your lights to warn other drivers.
